Americano: Pretty popular espresso based drink - basically a single shot of espresso diluted with hot water. Sometimes known as a Caffe Americano.

Barista: This person is a coffee god. He or she is the person that makes your coffee drinks in a coffee shop. A master of the espresso machine, a good barista will be able make you any coffee drink you may desire.
Cafe Au Lait: The French are good at one thing - their coffee - and this is their version of a milky coffee. Basically its boiling milk with hot coffee.
Caffe Latte: One of the most popular coffee drinks. This consists of either one or two shots of espresso with steamed milk. Tastes good with a sprinkling of chocolate powder, cinnamon or nutmeg - often just called a 'latte'.
Caffe Mocha: A very popular sweet drink, especially with the ladies. This is just a latte with chocolate syrup added. Often just called a 'mocha'.
Cappuccino: Along with Caffe Latte, these are the two most common espresso drinks. This is one shot of espresso served with half steamed milk, half hot foamed milk on top. Some places skip the steamed milk and only use foam.
Caramel Macchiatto: Made popular by Starbucks, this popular sweet drink is a latte with caramel syrup drizzled on top (macchiatto means 'marked').
Chai Latte: This is just basically a latte made with Chai instead of espresso. Chai is just spicy tea - very tasty, and is popular with ladies and hipsters.
Doppio: This is a double shot of espresso, usually between 3 to 6 ounces. True coffee lovers drink this straight for a big caffeine buzz. Very bitter tasting so some people often put a little milk and sugar in it - cheating in my opinion!
Espresso: This is the nectar of the coffee gods. Served as a one ounce shot of espresso made from Arabica beans. Comes in a small cup - often confuses first timers- 'is that all it is?' is commonly heard. Then the buzz kicks in...
Espresso Con Panna: An 'easier' way of drinking espresso - either one or two shots of espresso topped with whipped cream. A good tasty buzz!
Frappuccino: Another Starbucks invention - a coffee ice blended drink. Great for summer days, its not particularly strong unless you add another shot. Many variations can be found, mocha, caramel and even a coffee-free cream version.
Grande: Sometimes it feels like starbucks are taking over. Grande refers to a Starbucks 16 ounce cup of coffee. Sounds a little cooler than saying large...
Iced Coffee: Believe or not, but coffee tastes great on the rocks. You can either ice regular coffee, or have an iced americano. Refreshing buzz!
Mochaccino: Yep, you guessed it. This is just a regular cappuccino, but its made with chocolate syrup to give it a chocolaty taste. Another 'girly' drink.
Skinny: Don't worry, you won't offend anyone if you say 'skinny' in a coffee shop. It means you want non-fat or skim milk in your coffee drink.
Soy Latte : This is one for the tree huggers or dairy allergy people. Its a regular latte, but its made with soy milk instead of regular milk. Tastes very similar.
Tall: Weird one. Tall actually is the Starbucks equivalent of a 'regular' 12 ounce coffee. I guess Starbucks don't like being associated with 'regular' coffee!
Venti: The king of all Starbucks drink sizes. A venti is a 20 ounce cup size, that comes with 2 shots of espresso if its a latte or cappuccino (same as grande). Just in case you didn't know how to ask for a large coffee, I guess...
With Room : If you ask for this, you won't be finding out how much space you have. However, you will get room for milk or half and half so you don't spill!
So there it is. A pretty good guide to all words coffee. Hopefully when you next walk into a coffeeshop you will feel confident you know what's going on, and what to order without making a fool of yourself! |
