 Coffeeshop Etiquette

by Rich Page, a Coffee Lover    CoffeeShopCritic Articles

Don't treat a coffeeshop like McDonalds. It's a place of divinity to some. And don't annoy the people that work there either! Follow this simple etiquette guide to stay out of trouble at your local coffeeshop, and to make sure you don't get a crappy cup of coffee :) Who knows, you might make a friend or two while you are at it...

1: DO NOT talk on your cell phone if its quiet. It's nearly as bad as when they finally let people use cell phones on airplanes. People often come to coffeeshops for peace and quiet and to study. They don't want to listen to you yabbering on about your latest boy/girlfriend issues. Trust me.
2: Always tip the person making your coffee. Yep, even if its just 30 cents. Its just plain rude not to tip anything. And its pretty easy to make a bad cup of coffee. So next time, try tipping, and your coffee might taste better!
3: You may think your music is good. Just don't play it loud when listening to headphones - its easy to hear other people's music when its quiet. Some people don't like the latest Black Eyed Peas album :)
4: Order first, then claim the couch. Personally I hate it when people walk in a coffee shop and put their stuff down on the nice comfy couch, and then walk over to order a drink. Leaving anyone else with the fresh brewed coffee wondering who exactly is rude enough to just leave their stuff on the couch. See also - 'don't hog a big table while your 4 buddies order their drinks first'.
5: One coffee doesn't buy your seat all day. More about more people are working out of coffeeshops on their laptops. Which is cool thing. But this has led unfortunately to many people ordering one single coffee, then staying in the same table for hours on end. Its just plain not nice. At least get lunch or a snack, and another coffee. These businesses are trying to make money too you know!
6: The wonders of vibrate. Cell phones are great things, believe me, I can't live without mine. But one thing I can certainly live without is having to listen to people's dumb message alert noises. And boy do people love to text message these days. Do us all a favor and hit the ''vibrate' mode. We will all thankyou.
7: Take out the paper and the trash. For some reason, people always seem to clean up after themselves at McDonalds, but don't always throw away their trash at coffee shops. Why? If anything, you shouldn't be throwing your trash away at McDonalds ;) Respect your local coffeehouse!
Best to end on number 7 - its a lucky number. So there you have it, a rough guide to coffeeshop etiquette. Go ahead and reply if you have other pet peeves at coffee shops - we would love to hear them!
